Old Wounds, New Platforms: A Chinese Canadian Examination on Digital Hate and Historical Harm

CCNC-SJ’s Online Hate Project examines how anti-Asian racism, misinformation, and harmful narratives spread through digital platforms and contribute to real-world harm. Through community consultation, research, public education, policy advocacy, and practical resources, the project seeks to strengthen racial and legal literacy, improve platform accountability, and advance community-led responses to online hate.

The project culminated in the launch of Old Wounds, New Platforms: A Chinese Canadian Examination on Digital Hate and Historical Harm. Grounded in Chinese and East Asian Canadian histories and experiences, the report examines how longstanding narratives of exclusion, racial scapegoating, and the “perpetual foreigner” stereotype are reproduced and amplified online. It also identifies gaps in Canada’s legal and policy responses and offers community-informed recommendations for harm reduction, public accountability, knowledge mobilization, and more responsive regulation.
